I went to Wrightwood recently for just a taste of snow. It was in the melting stage, but I found some nonetheless. If I would have panned right just a little in this photo, you would see crowds of families sledding down every free area of the snowy slope. I guess this hill was a little too steep or tree covered. Or it could have to do with the fact that it exited right onto a curve in the road. Whatever the reason, I'm glad it was there. Empty and waiting, just glistening in the afternoon light. I crunched around a while. Just long enough for my fingertips to ache with cold through my gloves. Then I turned around and went back into the tiny, slow village of Wrightwood. I found a used book store, and it was the best sort of place to warm up.

On the way home, I passed Mormon Rocks. I don't know why they are named as such, and I'm not positive that I want to know why. It won't change the fact that they were lovely and I liked them just as they were. The ground around the area was scattered with granite and quartz and beach-like sand. I spent just as much time looking down as I did up. I waited out the last rays of sunlight and turned my car back down the freeway.
It wasn't a big escape, but it was enough. Just enough.

You caught the light on Mormon Rocks at just the right time.
ReplyDeleteBut I hate it when I find myself more interested in a used book store than in the great outdoors.
The light in these is really gorgeous, Amy! Sounds like a lovely mini-escape.
ReplyDeletePerfect shot of Mormon Rocks. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, you slipped this one by me, I missed it in my blogging travels, but better late than never, stopped by to admire the sun on Mormon rocks, and snow in the woods. Those Mormons sure get around... one of the fastest growing religions on earth apparently... Good to escape from time to time !
ReplyDeleteK - It was indeed perfect timing. I'm glad I at least wandered outdoors briefly before discovering the used bookstore.
ReplyDeleteShell - It was golden and lovely. Just a tiny break that I needed!
Christina - Thank you. :)
Owen - Always better late than never. I will be paying some of those late visits soon too.
It is a fast growing religion, I didn't think about how much it's grown outside the U.S.
I'm glad I got this brief escape. Life has been far too busy for my liking lately!
